UK polls: Rishi Sunak bracing for major loss, Labour Party marching ahead

| @indiablooms | Jul 05, 2024, at 02:10 pm

The opposition Labour Party is ahead in the UK general polls with the counting of votes currently underway on Friday.

The exit polls predicted Indian-origin British PM Rishi Sunak suffering a defeat in the polls.

A Labour Party victory will mean Keir Starmer becoming the Prime Minister of the country.

Latest figures showed the Labour Party is ahead in 164 seats while the Conservatives (Tories), led by PM Rishi Sunak, is leading in 27.

The majority figure needed by a party to form a government is 326.

As per exit poll predictions, Labour would win 410 seats in the 650-seat parliament.

On the contrary, the Conservatives (Tories) are expected to bag only 131 seats, one of the worst shows by the political outfit in several years.

The Conservatives have been ruling the nation for the past 14 years.

Starmer posted on X: "To everyone who has campaigned for Labour in this election, to everyone who voted for us and put their trust in our changed Labour Party - thank you."

In one of the major defeats registered in the polls so far, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps lost his seat to Labour, reported BBC.

Earlier, Sunak, who made desperate attempts to keep his chances afloat, posted on X: " Stop the Labour supermajority. Vote Conservative."

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has won the seat from the pro-Brexit town of Clacton.

He had played a leading role in ensuring Britain's departure from the European Union.

It was his eighth attempt to become an MP.

He was the second Reform UK leader to bag a seat in the polls with  Lee Anderson winning Ashfield earlier.
