A second-year medical student from Odisha was allegedly dragged and raped inside the premises of a private medical college in Durgapur, West Bengal, more than a year after the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case shocked the state, media reports said on Saturday.

Sources told India Today the student stepped out of the campus on Friday at 8.30 pm with a male friend. Near the campus gate, a man allegedly dragged her to a secluded area behind the hospital and raped her.

The survivor was later admitted to a hospital for treatment, and police have launched an investigation into the incident.

The victim’s father told India Today that he learned about the attack from his daughter’s friend.

“When I reached there, my daughter was in a serious condition, and there was no response from the hospital administration,” he said.

He further alleged that his daughter had gone outside the campus to eat phuchka (golgappas) after being called there by her freind.

“When she reached the campus gate, around four to five persons were there. One of them raped her, took her mobile phone, and demanded ₹3,000 to return it. Later, the boy who had gone with her brought her back,” he was quoted as saying by India Today.

The latest incident has drawn parallels with the 2024 RG Kar Medical College and Hospital case in Kolkata, where a young doctor was raped and murdered, sparking widespread outrage across West Bengal.

BJP leader Amit Malviya reacted to the incident and wrote on X, "The memories of the horrific rape and murder of a lady doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have resurfaced."

He said: "A second-year medical student from IQ City Medical College and Hospital in Durgapur (West Bengal) was gang-raped in a nearby forest area by Wasif Ali and his associates."

The BJP leader further said: "The survivor, a resident of Odisha, is currently undergoing treatment, and her statement has been recorded. The brutal crime has triggered massive protests across Durgapur, with people demanding swift justice and accountability from the Mamata Banerjee government.West Bengal is not safe for women."
