Massive fire at Mumbai BEST depot, 10 buses gutted; blasts heard

A massive fire broke out at a BEST bus depot in Central Mumbai on Monday evening, engulfing multiple buses and sending thick plumes of black smoke into the sky.

The blaze erupted at around 5:45 pm at the BEST undertaking's Anik depot yard, a BEST spokesperson told PTI.

At least 10 buses were reported burnt in the fire.

All the affected vehicles were wet-leased, air-conditioned Midi CNG buses procured from private operator Daga Group.

Blasts heard as fire rips through buses

Eyewitnesses reported hearing blasts at the depot as the fire spread through the buses.

Videos and visuals circulating on social media showed dense black smoke rising from the burning vehicles.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.

Four fire engines, five tankers deployed

A civic official said at least four fire engines, five water tankers and other firefighting vehicles were rushed to the spot.

Firefighters battled the blaze for more than an hour before bringing it under control.

There were no reports of injuries in the incident.

Officials are expected to investigate the cause of the fire and determine how the blaze spread through the parked buses.
