Political storm in J&K: 24 NC MLAs turn against Omar Abdullah after cabinet reshuffle
Srinagar/IBNS: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is facing dissent within his own party, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC), days after a cabinet reshuffle, with 24 MLAs reportedly expressing dissatisfaction over the functioning of the government, media reports said.
According to NDTV, the disgruntled legislators are demanding the removal of the Chief Minister's advisor and some ministers, raising concerns over governance and the criteria followed during the recent cabinet reshuffle.
24 MLAs raise voice against leadership
At least 18 NC MLAs reportedly met at the residence of party lawmaker Qaisar Jamshid Lone in Srinagar on Friday evening, calling for internal reforms, greater accountability in governance and transparency in the parameters followed for the cabinet reshuffle.
Six other legislators reportedly joined the meeting online.
The lawmakers are seeking changes within the party and government, while maintaining that their concerns are not directed against the NC leadership.
"We want to meet the Chief Minister to convey our demands. We are not against the party, but it cannot be business as usual. He (the CM) should listen to us and make changes that are in the interest of the party and the government," a disgruntled MLA was quoted as saying by NDTV.
Demand removal of advisor, some ministers
Another lawmaker said the legislators had taken an oath to fight for internal democracy within the party.
"We want the removal of the CM's advisor and some ministers, a roadmap for implementing the party manifesto, and the empowerment of MLAs," the legislator was quoted as saying.
Political challenge for Omar Abdullah government
The reported dissent could pose a political challenge for the Omar Abdullah-led government if the 24 MLAs continue to remain dissatisfied.
The ruling coalition comprises 41 National Conference legislators, six Congress MLAs and support from other members.
The developments come shortly after the cabinet reshuffle, adding to the political pressure on the Chief Minister and the ruling party in the Union Territory.
