Home Ministry orders probe into Essar phone tapping scandal
New Delhi, Jun 19 (IBNS): The Home Ministry has ordered an inquiry into an alleged phone tapping scandal by corporate conglomerate Essar Group which involved top government officials and industrialists between 2001 and 2006 following a complaint to the Prime Minister's Office, media reports said.
On Friday, the Indian Express newspaper and Outlook magazine reported that Essar had allegedly tapped phones of several cabinet ministers, business chiefs Mukesh Ambani and Anil Ambani and many bureaucrats over five years.
The probe has been ordered after a Delhi-based lawyer Suren Uppal submitted a complaint to the Prime Minister's Office.
He had claimed to represent a former Essar employee Albasit Khan who allegedly carried out the phone taps.
