London/UNI/Xinhua: Britain registered 53,945 new COVID-19 infections, the highest since July 17, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 10,329,074, according to official figures released Thursday.

The country also reported a further 141 coronavirus-related deaths. The total number of coronavirus-related deaths in Britain now stands at 145,281, with 7,644 COVID-19 patients still in hospital.

The latest data came as the country confirmed another 10 Omicron coronavirus variant cases, bringing the total number of people with the strain identified in Britain to 42.

Meanwhile, more than a million people in Britain are continuing to experience long COVID, new figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) suggested.

An estimated 1.2 million people in private households reported having long COVID in the four weeks to Oct. 31.

More than 88 percent of people aged 12 and over in Britain have had their first dose of vaccine and more than 80 percent have received both doses, according to the latest figures. More than 33 percent have received booster jabs, or the third dose of a coronavirus vaccine.

To bring life back to normal, countries such as Britain, China, Germany, Russia and the United States have been racing against time to roll out coronavirus vaccines.
