No restriction on breastfeeding after Covid-19 vaccination: Centre clears misinformation

New Delhi/IBNS: The Centre has clarified that breastfeeding is absolutely safe after getting coronavirus vaccine and it should not stop even for a single hour.

Niti Aayog (health) member Dr VK Paul said on Saturday that there should be no disruption in breastfeeding due to vaccination adding that many misleading claims have been made that mothers should not breastfeed their newborns immediately after the jab and wait for at least two days to resume.

Dr VK Paul stated that no government advisory advises against breastfeeding by lactating mothers post their inoculation.

"In no situation, breastfeeding should be halted even for an hour," he asserted.

Government has recently allowed vaccination of lactating mothers based on the recommendations of expert groups.

However, a similar recommendation for pregnant women hasn't been accepted as the government said more deliberations are required before taking the final decision.

According to experts, Covid-19 does not spread from breast milk to a baby but it may spread from respiratory droplets. Therefore, doctors have advised  face masks or face shields for lactating mothers.
