No data to suggest raw fruits cause mucormycosis : AIIMS chief busts myth

New Delhi/IBNS: Controlling the blood sugar levels of Covid-19 patients is key to preventing Black Fungus Disease or Mucormycosis and there is no data to suggest that a person can develop the infection by consuming raw fruits, AIIMS chief Dr Randeep Guleria said Friday while speaking about cause and misinformation surrounding the disease, according to media reports.

Dr Guleria said plenty of false information on the disease is in circulation. However, there is no scientific data to link consumption of raw fruits and mucormycosis. It has also nothing to do with the type of oxygen being used and people in home isolation have also developed the disease, he added.

Uncontrolled diabetes with coronavirus infection makes a patient vulnerable to the infection, he said, adding that there is an increased number of fungal infection cases in the second wave and this was also reported to some extent during the SARS outbreak.

He emphasised on three factors that can prevent Black Fungus infection--good control of blood sugar levels, those on steroids must monitor blood sugar levels regularly and being careful about when to give steroids and their dosage.

At least 7,250 people have been infected by Black Fungus and at last 219 related deaths have been reported.
