Bhubaneswar/IBNS: The Odisha government on Monday evacuated people from vulnerable areas as Cyclone Murasu intensified into a severe cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal, media reports said.

The storm is expected to make landfall along the south Andhra Pradesh coast, while several parts of southern Odisha are likely to receive heavy rainfall.

Cyclone Murasu to cross Andhra Pradesh coast

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the severe cyclonic storm was moving west-northwestwards at a speed of 25 kmph over the west-central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal.

In its latest bulletin issued on Monday morning, the IMD said the storm was centred near latitude 13.9°N and longitude 81.8°E at 5:30 am.

It was located approximately 200 km east-northeast of Chennai, 210 km east-southeast of Nellore, 270 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam, 220 km east-southeast of Kavali and 260 km southeast of Ongole.

The IMD said Murasu is very likely to move northwestwards and cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast as a severe cyclonic storm with wind speeds of 100-110 kmph, gusting up to 120 kmph.

The expected landfall location is between Nellore and Narsapur, close to Ongole, around midnight on November 2 and during the early hours of November 3.

Odisha districts placed on high alert

Several parts of Odisha have already started experiencing light rainfall as the storm approaches the eastern coastline.

The state government has initiated evacuation measures in vulnerable areas, while district administrations have been directed to remain on high alert.

All district collectors, particularly those in southern Odisha, have been alerted in view of the possibility of heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions.

IMD issues red warning

The IMD has issued a red-category warning for the Andhra Pradesh coast and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coast as the severe cyclonic storm approaches land.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with coastal districts expected to remain on alert during the storm's passage.
