Kolkata, Apr 3 (IBNS): The trial run of the first container train service between India and Bangladesh from Kolkata to Dhaka was flagged off by V.Kalyana Rama, CMD, Container Corporation of India (CCI) and Harindra Rao, General Manager, Eastern Railways at Concor terminus near Majherhat station in Kolkata on Tuesday.

Loaded with over 1,100 tonnes of animal feed (de-oiled cake), the 60-container train will travel over 300 km through Majerhat, Naihati, Ranaghat and Gede in India and Darsana and Ishurdi in Bangladesh before reaching Bangabandhu West station, 117km from Dhaka.

Harindra Rao, General Manager, Eastern Railways, said, that passenger and goods trains are already running between the two countries. This is the first time that a container service is being started.

Once the trial run is successful and if Bangladesh gives its clearances, the container train services will be introduced on a regular basis, he said.

V.Kalyana Rama, CMD, Container Corporation of India said that there was a demand for exporting goods to Bangladesh, especially  steel, cement, machine parts, and food grains among others.

He said that this will drastically reduce the transportation time and cost between both the countries and save time and trade costs significantly apart from making trade safer and more organized.

Rathendra Raman, CGM, Eastern Region of CCI and Basudev Panda, DRM, Sealdah were also present.
