India exports maiden consignment of organic Palmyra Jaggery Powder to Bulgaria
India has exported its maiden consignment of organic Palmyra Jaggery Powder to Bulgaria, marking a significant step towards expanding international markets for the country’s traditional agricultural products.
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, facilitated the flag-off of the 1.755-metric-tonne consignment from Gobichettipalayam in Tamil Nadu’s Erode district to Varna, Bulgaria, on October 15, 2026.
The product, also known as Palmyra Blossom Nectar, is certified under India’s National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) and European Union (EU) organic standards.
According to a government statement, the consignment was manufactured and exported by Erode-based Wellbeing Foods in collaboration with Chennai-based Chetty Exports Private Limited. The shipment will be transported by sea through Chennai Port, with Bulgaria-based Sow Life Ltd serving as the overseas importer and distributor.
The initiative aims to strengthen international market linkages for Tamil Nadu’s traditional Palmyra-based products, diversify India’s organic export basket and create new opportunities for producers engaged in organic cultivation.
The project covers 137 acres under organic cultivation and is expected to benefit farmers by improving market access and strengthening export-oriented value chains.
According to the statement, the initiative offers approximately 15-22% higher price realisation for farmers and 17% higher returns for the manufacturer compared with the domestic market, creating opportunities to improve farmer incomes and support sustainable livelihoods.
Palmyra Jaggery Powder is derived from the nectar of Palmyra palm blossoms and is traditionally used as a sweetener in India. As an alternative to refined sugar, it has potential for value addition and wider acceptance in international markets.
The flag-off ceremony was attended by APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev, who formally flagged off the consignment, and APEDA Secretary Dr Saswati Bose. Senior APEDA officials, representatives of the exporting companies, international partners, progressive farmers and other stakeholders associated with the export value chain were also present.
Their participation highlighted the collaboration between government agencies, exporters, international buyers and farmers in promoting India’s agricultural exports.
Palmyra-based products are rooted in Tamil Nadu’s agricultural and cultural traditions. Developing export-ready products from the Palmyra palm offers opportunities to expand international market access while supporting local producers and businesses across the value chain.
APEDA continues to facilitate exports of certified organic and value-added agricultural products by supporting market development, quality compliance and connections between Indian producers and overseas buyers.
The maiden shipment of organic Palmyra Jaggery Powder to Bulgaria is expected to pave the way for further market expansion and strengthen the international presence of India’s traditional agricultural products.
