Kolkata, Sep 19 (IBNS): Star Cement, a leading cement brand from north-eastern India, offered large-scale relief services to flood affected districts in Assam and parts of West Bengal and Bihar, during the recent devastation that hit the regions, according to the company.

It served more than 10,000 flood affected households, covering 60,000 people, spread across six districts of Assam, two districts of West Bengal and one of Bihar.

In Assam, it offered relief to people of Majuli, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Morigaon, Kamrup Metropolitan District and Dhubri. In West Bengal, it reached out to people in the districts of Uttar Dinajpur and Dakshin Dinajpur. In Bihar, it took relief to flood hit Kishanganj district.

The people in these areas faced the threat of flood from elevated water levels and were forced to seek shelter in relief camps.

It was necessary to get across vast quantities of relief material to these people who had left their hearth and home.

Each packet of relief material contained rice, dal,  salt, soyabean, biscuit, milk powder, Chirwa, water, candle with and match boxes etc. in a quantity that will meet the food requirement of a five-member family for four days.

More than 5,000 households were supported with food items like staple food, readily eatable items etc. in the two districts of West Bengal, the company said.

Sanjay Kumar Gupta, CEO, Star Cement said, “Flood takes away the lives of people and animals and severely affects the livelihood of general people apart from damaging property and capital infrastructure. We believe that the most immediate and short term response to the nature made crisis situation is to provide relief. We are making every effort to reach those flood affected families who others have not been able to reach and those who have received minimal quantity of relief items so far.”

The Relief Program was managed and monitored by a team of volunteers from Star Cement with the support of local dealers under the guidance of Pradeep Purohit – Vice President, SCM.

Relief distribution program was conducted in the presence of the local administration, panchayat members, local youth organisations and village headman for smooth and effective distribution of the material so that the relief reached those who were in need of it, the company said.
