Ola launches Road Safety Initiative in Kolkata

| | Jan 16, 2016, at 08:42 pm
Kolkata, Jan16 (IBNS): Ola, India's leading mobile app for transportation today announced the launch of its Road Safety Initiative in Kolkata in association with The Bidhannagar Traffic Police. Under the campaign, Ola will celebrate "Road Safety Week" in Kolkata between Jan 10 and 16 to drive home the message against over speeding and drunk driving.

According to the data from National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for the year 2014, Kolkata saw the highest percentage increase in road accidents amongst all the major metro cities in India. Compared to 2013, in which Kolkata had witnessed a total of 4206 accidents, in 2014, the city recorded a total of 4789 accidents, a substantial increase of 13.9 percent.

In these accidents, 431 people lost their lives on city roads while another 4832 got injured. This campaign, in association with the City Traffic Police will help increase citizen awareness of traffic rules and precautionary measures that can help save thousands of lives in the time to come.

PiyushSurana, Business Head, East at Ola said, “Over speeding and drunk driving are the major causes behind road accidents in India. With hundreds of thousands of driver-partners on the Ola platform serving customers across the country for their mobility needs, we are committed to enhancing safety on roads and improving adherence to traffic rules. Through the Road Safety Week campaign in association with the Bidhannagar Traffic Police, we are confident of driving awareness of traffic rules resulting in responsible driving and making alternate mobility choices towards a safer city. We believe initiatives like these will go a long way in forwarding our mission of building mobility for a billion people.”

ADCP, Bidhannagar City Police, Miss ShivaniTewari says "We are happy to partner with Ola for a cause that creates awareness about safe driving. People drive vehicles to reach their destination to cater their needs. However, distracted, careless and undisciplined driving brings unnecessary problems for a family in case of an accident. A person should be cautious and obey traffic and road safety rules while driving. We are happy that Ola is partnering with us in this campaign and supported us with their creative ideas in the campaign."

In the past Ola has partnered with Odisha Police Department for a similar exercise in the state. Ola has also partnered with brands like SABMiller India to create awareness around the perils of over speeding and drunk driving on the roads.
