At least three people have died and five others were injured after a massive rock formation collapsed at a popular tourist destination in Turkey, according to Mirror.

The incident occurred in Goreme, in the Cappadocia region, following heavy rainfall in recent days that reportedly triggered a landslide.

A section of a distinctive volcanic rock formation, locally known as a “fairy chimney”, broke away and crashed into an area where visitors were gathered.

Search and rescue operation underway

The collapse took place near the Goreme Open-Air Museum, a major tourist attraction in the region.

Witnesses reportedly heard a loud noise as the towering rock formation crumbled, sending clouds of dust into the air.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, and a large-scale search and rescue operation was launched amid fears that other visitors could be trapped beneath the fallen rock fragments.

According to Turkish broadcaster TRT Haber, the debris fell onto an area where people were standing when the formation gave way.

Investigation launched into collapse

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident to establish the circumstances surrounding the collapse.

Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the incident.

He said he prayed for mercy for the deceased and offered his condolences and strength to their families and loved ones.

Cappadocia is internationally renowned for its unusual volcanic landscape, cave dwellings and towering fairy chimneys, attracting visitors from around the world.

The incident has raised concerns over visitor safety at the popular geological attraction.
