Kabul/Kathmandu/UNI: Nepal on Sunday handed over 14 tonnes of humanitarian assistance comprising medicine, clothes, and utensils among others, to UN representatives based in Kabul, Afghanistan.

A team led by Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sewa Lamsal, flew to Kabul in a chartered flight of Himalayan Airlines on Sunday morning for the purpose.

Nepal’s Foreign Ministry said in a tweet: “Sewa Lamsal, joint secretary of Nepal MoFa, hands over humanitarian assistance from Nepal to Dr. Ramiz Alakbarov, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and the Humanitarian & Development Coordinator for Afghanistan, at Kabul airport.”

According to Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Narayan Khadka, the in-kind assistance weighed over 14 tonnes except for food items.

It is for the first time in the modern history of Nepal that the government provided humanitarian assistance to foreign countries on its own effort.

He said the act had sent across the message that Nepal could provide humanitarian assistance to other countries in the event of disasters.

The aid was made available by the United Nations, the Consul General based in Kathmandu, Nepali industrialists and business persons, the Himalayan Airlines, Nepal Oil Corporation, among other donors.
