A 72-year-old Indian-origin woman who had been missing for nearly two months in California was found dead in a canal by an irrigation district worker, media reports said.

The woman, identified as Ajit Kaur, had been missing since August after disappearing from an apartment complex in California.

An employee of the Turlock Irrigation District (TID) discovered her body in the Lower Lateral 3 Canal near Central Avenue and Keyes Road in Ceres on October 24 while conducting routine rounds.

Police officers rushed to the spot and confirmed that the remains were human.

The subsequent identification process established that the deceased was Kaur.

Last seen in August

According to police, Kaur was last seen near Whitmore Avenue and Mitchell Road in the city on the afternoon of August 23.

She had reportedly disappeared from an apartment complex, triggering a search operation.

Police traced possible route

Investigating officers said their inquiry into Kaur's disappearance led them to believe that she might have entered the TID canal east of the apartment complex.

Police pursued available leads and mapped the possible water routes she could have travelled in an effort to locate her.

The circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation.
