IS blows up landmark mosque in Mosul

| | Jun 22, 2017, at 03:24 pm
Baghdad, Jun 22 (IBNS): The Islamic State (IS) has blown up the iconic Great Mosque of al-Nuri in Mosul, the Iraqi and US forces said.

This is the same place where IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi proclaimed himself a 'caliph' (chief).

However, contrary to reports, the IS through its Amaq news outlet said that it was destroyed by the US forces.

Meanwhile, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has stated that blowing up the landmark meant that the IS is finally bowing down.

A senior US commander stationed in Iraq was quoted in the media as saying that the IS trampled "one of Mosul and Iraq's great treasures".

"This is a crime against the people of Mosul and all of Iraq, and is an example of why this brutal organisation must be annihilated," the commander added.

The IS has been accused of destroying a number of important landmarks in the Middle East.
