Indian PM Narendra Modi, who is currently visiting Sri Lanka, on Saturday met the 1996 World Cup winning team in Colombo.

The players whom Modi included Sri Lankan cricket legends Marvan Atapattu, Chaminda Vaas, current senior men's team coach Sanath Jayasuriya and Aravinda de Silva, amongst others.

Modi shared several images of his interaction with the Sri Lankan stars.

He wrote on X: "Delighted to interact with members of the 1996 Sri Lankan cricket team, which won the World Cup that year. This team captured the imagination of countless sports lovers!"

Under the inspiring leadership of Arjuna Ranatunga, Sri Lanka defeated Australia in Pakistan to lift the title in 1996.

This was the only time Sri Lanka has won a 50-over World Cup title so far.

It also marked the dominance of the Sri Lankan team in Asian cricket in the late 90s era.

Ranatunga and Jayasuriya became household names across cricket loving nations following the victory.
