Women film makers changing cinematic trend: Esha Niyogi De

Kolkata, Dec 18 (IBNS): Esha Niyogi De recently talked about recent studies that explored how women enter film industries the ways and in which a woman film maker change the cinematic trends in Kolkata.

De is a feminist scholar of South Asian cinema, literature and post colonial and transnational theory. Her areas of expertise are women-made cinema in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

She is also the author of “Empire” and “Media and the Autonomous Woman: A Feminist Critique of Post Colonial Thought.

A program named ‘Border-Crossing Cinema By Women Filmmakers’, highlighted film makers from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

She upholded a presentation examining the ways in which women’s and minority-rights movements, both, worldwide and cross regional flows of people and images have produced progressive women film makers in South Asia.

Speaking at the American Cetre here, she mentioned about several women-filmmakers and their movies.

De said, “From the inception of mordern technology in mordern Europe technology has been thought of man’s domain. The European idea in the late 18th century was, men belong to the public sphere of science and technology while women, including educated women belonged at home therefore they can not do technical.

"Even in today women in technical field are less, women in directing and photography are minimum, sound and technology even less. It is a big struggle to get women in technology. Position of women as a director or a producer has been sadly lacking because most film studies will focus on women aspectical as images is looked up as stars not as producer or directors. Not as makers accessing resources taking decision," she added
