Where do you get the power? Supreme Court slams Delhi LG over civic body panel poll call

| @indiablooms | Oct 04, 2024, at 08:33 pm

New Delhi/IBNS: The Supreme Court on Friday slammed Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena for calling elections to civic body panel poll "in glaring hurry" besides raising question on LG's jurisdiction in taking such a step, media reports said.

"Nomination issue is also there... Mayor (Shelly Oberoi of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party) is there to preside. Where do you (the LG) get the power?" the court asked as quoted by NDTV.

The bench comprising Justices PS Narasimha and R Mahadevan added, "What happens to democracy if interfere like this? Is there politics in this too?" (sic)

The court has asked Saxena to file a reply in response.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the elections after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) boycotted it after Saxena gave a call for polls at 10 pm.

The AAP had reasoned it was impossible to summon all its councillors at that hour besides citing LG had no power to call the elections.

After AAP boycotted the elections, BJP's Sundar Singh was elected to the 18th and final seat of the Standing Committee.

It was a clear victory for the BJP as AAP had boycotted the elections and Congress abstained from voting.
