Mid-air scare on Delhi-Chennai IndiGo flight: Plane diverted to Hyderabad after power bank catches fire

| @indiablooms | Oct 11, 2026, at 07:25 pm

A Delhi-to-Chennai-bound IndiGo flight had a major scare on Sunday after smoke was detected from a passenger’s personal electronic device in the aircraft’s overhead luggage compartment, prompting the pilots to divert the plane to Hyderabad.

The aircraft landed safely at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, and all passengers and crew members remained safe.

According to media reports, the incident was allegedly triggered by a malfunctioning power bank.

A video of the incident, apparently recorded by a passenger, has since gone viral on social media. It showed frightened passengers attempting to extinguish the flames inside IndiGo flight 6E6115.

The cabin crew eventually brought the situation under control using a fire extinguisher.

In a statement, IndiGo said, as quoted by NDTV, “IndiGo flight 6E 6115, operating from Delhi to Chennai on October 11, 2026, was diverted to Hyderabad after smoke was detected from a customer's personal electronic device.”

The airline further stated, “The cabin crew responded promptly, and the situation was brought under control. In line with established protocols, the pilots diverted the flight and landed safely at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad.”

IndiGo arranged an alternative flight for passengers who wished to continue their journey to Chennai.
