Kolkata/Birbhum, Jan 15 (IBNS): A police station at Mayureswar in West Bengal's Birbhum district was vandalized on Friday by local angry mob after a road accident, where a youth was run over by a truck, reports said.

According to reports, a dumper, carrying sand, ran over a local youth at Majhai Para under Mayureswar Police Station area in Birbhum district on Friday morning. When police force went there to recover the body of killed youth, local villagers attacked them and set two police jeeps on fire.

Thereafter the angry mob reached Mayureswar Police Station, thrashed the on-duty personnel and also ransacked the place. All policemen, including the Officer-in-Charge (OC), escaped from the police station and took shelter inside police-barracks nearby. The police-barrack was also vandalized by the mob.

After nearly three and half hours, a huge police force, led by SDPO of Rampurhat, rushed to the spot from Suri Sadar and restored to lathicharge to disperse the mob.

However, the situation has been brought under control and police have started search operation in nearby villages to nab the people, who created violence there.
