Voting underway in Assam, Goa, Sikkim, Tripura

Guwahati, Apr 12 (IBNS) Voting for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections has begun in seven constituencies of Assam, Goa, Sikkim and Tripura on Saturday morning.

Polling is taking place in three Lok Sabha seats in Assam, two in Goa, one in Sikkim and one in Tripura.

More than 50 lakh voters in these four states will on Saturday decide the fate of 74 candidates.

In Assam, total 37 candidates of three Lok Sabha constituencies are in fray in the fourth phase polls in Assam, where campaigning came to an end on Thursday afternoon.

Candidates of the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Communist Party of India (Marxist), Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist), Samajwadi Party (SP), Shiv Sena, All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (Liberation) are contesting in the three seats in Karimganj (SC), Silchar and Autonomous District (ST).

An electorate of 29,26,762 including 14,00,594 women will exercise their franchise at 3,698 polling stations for the fourth phase polls.

Among the 37 candidates, present Member of Parliament of Karimganj (SC) constituency Kabindra Purkayastha, Krishna Das, Jairam Engleng are contesting for BJP, where present MP Lalit Mohan Suklabaidya, Biren Singh Engti, Sushmita Dev are also in fray for Congress.

In the other hand, Rabindra Nath Choudhury and Bijoy Krishna Nath are contesting for AGP.

Security measures have been tightened with additional forces deployed at each polling station.

In North Goa, former Congress chief minister Ravi Naik is contesting against three times MP and former Union Minister Sripad Naik of the BJP. AAP has fielded Dattaram Desai from the Lok Sabha seat. 

Congress candidate Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, BJP candidate Narendra Sawaikar and AAP candidate Swati Kerkar are contesting for the South Goa seat.

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar cast his vote in North Goa in the early hours.

"My performance in Goa and the Modi wave will help Goa return to power," Parikkar told CNN-IBN after casting his vote.

In Sikkim, six candidates are in the fray for the lone Lok Sabha seat.

There are 3,62,326 voters, including 1,75,549 women, in the state.

In Tripura, the contest is between the CPI-M, the Congress, the Trinamool Congress and the BJP.
