In a tweet, he wrote: "Very sad to learn of Pranab Mukherjee's passing. Through his long career in public service, he contributed much to the U.S.-India relationship, including signing the U.S.-India Civil Nuclear Agreement when he was the Minister of External Affairs. Our condolences to his family."

The former India president passed away here at Army R&R Army Hospital on Monday, after prolonged illness. He was 84.

Mukherjee was admitted in the hospital on August 10 in a critical condition. He had a large brain clot, for which he underwent an emergency life-saving surgery. He was also found to be suffering from COVID-19.
