TMC leader arrested with fire arms at Kolkata airport, sent to police custody
According to reports, TMC's Pandabeswar block president Narendranath Chakraborty was scheduled travel to Chennai in a SpiceJet flight on Sunday afternoon. During security checks, one revolver and several cartridges were spotted inside his bag, through a luggage-scanner.
The CISF immediately detained the TMC leader and handed him over to the police.
Police from NSCBI Airport Police station arrested Chakraborty and have charged him under Arms Act section 25(1)(a).
One senior CISF official posted at NSCBI Airport told IBNS, "He was detained around 4:15 pm. yesterday. One revolver with 'Made in Italy' stamp and at least three live cartridges were found inside his luggage."
"He neither informed the airline authority about the gun nor could produce its license to us. He claimed that he had no idea how the gun and cartridges came into his luggage and he had been impligated. After preliminary questioning, we handed over him to the Bidhannagar City Police," he added.
A Airport Authority of India (AAI) official told IBNS, "A person, who is carrying 'licensed' gun or cartridge with him, has to inform the airline authority and needs to pay rupees 5000 for a domestic trip."
"After examining all valid documents, regarding to the fire arms, airline authority gives permission. But the fire arm will be carried by an airline crew, not by the owner, during fly. After the trip, the fire arm will be handed over to the passenger at the destination airport," he further said.
The TMC leader was produced to the Barrackpore Sub Divisional Court on Monday and sent to one-day police custody.
The court has also directed the police to produce Narendranath Chakraborty along with the case diary on Tuesday.
"We have started investigation into the case. He is being interrogated. We won't say anything more right now," one senior official of the Bidhannagar City Police told IBNS.
However, no reaction has been received yet from the TMC leadership.
