TMC announces candidates list for upcoming Bengal polls

Kolkata, Mar 4 (IBNS): Minutes after the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the election schedule in five states, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Friday afternoon declared its candidates list for West Bengal Assembly polls which will be starting from Apr 4.

"In 2011 election, we had 31 women candidates and 38 contestants from minority communities. This year we have increased the numbers to 45 and 57 respectively. Few new candidates are contesting in the election and almost all MLAs are taking part," West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said.

TMC are showcasing few celebrity and new faces in this election.

Former Bengal cricketer Laxmiratan Shukla and former BCCI president late Jagmohan Dalmiya's daughter Baishali Dalmiya are contesting from Howrah North and Bally constituencies respectively.

Former Indian football team captain Bhaichung Bhutia and footballer Rahim Nabi are taking part in this battle from Siliguri and Pandua constituencies.

Besides this, expelled CPI-M leader Rezzak Mollah, who joined TMC last month, and former Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leader Harka Bahadur Chhetri, who has formed his new political organization- Jan Andolan Party (JAP) in January, are contesting under TMC's logo from Bhangar and Kalimpong assembly constituencies.

"Actor Soham Chakraborty is contesting from Borjola constituency in Bankura district, singer Indranil Sen from Chandannagar constituency and Muslim leader Siddiqullah Chowdhury will be contesting from Mongalkote constituency in Burdwan district," Mamata Banerjee added.

She also said that jailed TMC leader former state Sports and Transport Minister Madan Mitra will be participating from Kamarhati constituency.

Meanwhile, talking on ECI's decision to conduct election in Bengal in six phases, Mamata Banerjee said, "I can't understand why the Election Commission is conducting polls in peaceful state West Bengal in six phases and seven days. Communal tension-hit Assam will observe polls in just two phases. Anyways, ECI is a constitutional body, we are welcoming its decision."

She also announced that the election manifesto of her TMC for this election will be published on Mar 11.

Mamata Banerjee is contesting this election from Bhawanipore assembly constituency.
