Sweet shops across West Bengal go on strike to protest against GST

Kolkata, Aug 21 (IBNS): Over 2 lakh sweet shops across West Bengal observed a day-long shut down on Monday to protest against Central government's decision of imposing Goods and Service Tax (GST) on sweet items.

Owners of the sweet shops have called for a three-day-long hunger strike which is scheduled to be held in Kolkata's downtown Esplanade area from Thursday (Aug 24) to Saturday (Aug 26).

The West Bengal Sweet Sellers Association (WBSSA), which led the strike today, has threatened to strengthen its movement if the Centre doesn't withdraw GST from sweets.

GST was implemented by the Cetre from July 1.
