Supreme Court stays proceedings pending in various HCs against 'Adipurush'

New Delhi/IBNS/UNI: The Supreme Court Friday stayed the proceedings pending in various High Courts against Hindi film Adipurush and dismissed a PIL filed by a practicing lawyer, seeking revocation of CBFC certification of the movie for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.

A bench of the top court, headed by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, passed the order, after hearing a plea seeking revocation of the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) certificate for the Hindi film, Adipurush.

It stayed the proceedings in multiple High Courts against Adipurush movie makers.

The Allahabad High Court had earlier last week asked the producer, director and dialogue writer of the movie to personally appear before it.

The apex court also cautioned courts against sitting in appeal over censor board certification in such matters.

Harish Salve, senior lawyer and former Solicitor General (SG) appearing for the film's producer, told the Supreme Court that countless people are going before various high courts seeking different prayers.

While refusing to entertain the Public Interest Litigation, the Supreme Court in its order said, "These are not matters for this court to hear and sit in appeal of certification. If anyone is aggrieved by a decision of appellate authority they can pursue remedies under law."

The apex court also noted in its order that the PIL has been filed under Article 32 by a practicing advocate seeking revocation of certification to feature film Adipurush for hurting religious sentiments, distorting texts and facts.

There are also countless people approaching different High Courts.

"We may hold here that cinematographic depictions play with the original material, to what extent it is permissible a body is there. It is not possible for this court to interfere for each person's sensibilities under Article 32," the top court said in its order.
