New Delhi/IBNS: In a setback for Arvind Kejriwal, the Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the former Delhi Chief Minister's plea challenging the defamation case against him over his comment on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's educational qualification.

The defamation case was filed by the Gujarat University after Kejriwal made comments questioning the validity of Modi's credentials including his degree from Gujarat University.

The Gujarat University considered Kejriwal's comments as derogatory and damaging to the institution's reputation.

Piyush Patel, the university's registrar, filed a criminal defamation suit against Kejriwal and other Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh.

The Central Information Commission (CIC) in 2016 directed the Delhi University and Gujarat University to reveal the details of Modi's degree.

However, the Gujarat High Court set aside the CIC's direction to disclose the details of the Prime Minister's degree.

Kejriwal filed his plea in the top court after the Gujarat High Court dismissed his petition in February 2024.
