New Delhi, Feb 18 (IBNS): Meeting President Pranab Mukherjee over the JNU row, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi slammed the RSS and said it is trying to impose a 'dead ideology' on students of the country.

"The RSS is trying to impose a dead ideology on students of this country. Congress Party won't let that happen," Gandhi told reporters after meeting the President .

Speaking on his meeting with Mukherjee, Gandhi said: "We request the President to ensure that immediate action is taken to check the state of lawlessness & subversion of democratic rights."

" As the patron of Universities, we call upon the President to protect their freedom and uphold the values that built our nation," he said.

He said the attack on the press appeared to be designed to intimidate and threaten the fourth pillar of our democracy.

Attacking the Centre, Gandhi said: "Across the country, whether in JNU, HCU or FTII, students are being bullied and threatened, for holding views contrary to the ruling dispensation."

He said the NDA government has displayed a dangerous tendency of undermining democratic freedoms and crushing the voices of those who do not share their views.

Gandhi said 'nationalism' is in his blood.

"I have seen my family sacrifice again & again for the nation," Gandhi said.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)  is currently facing protests and counter protests with the police cracking down on students over the anti-India slogans raised earlier to mark the death anniversary of Parliament Attack convict Afzal Guru on its campus in the national capital.

JNU teachers, students and media persons were allegedly attacked by lawyers in New Delhi's Patiala Court on Monday and Wednesday.

Kanhaiya Kumar, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student, who was arrested on sedition charges, on Wednesday appealed for peace in a Delhi court.

He made this appeal moments after he was attacked twice by lawyers.

"I believe in the unity and integrity of India and I do not support any unconstitutional or anti-national activities," Kumar was quoted as saying at the Pataiala House Court, where his bail plea was heard.

The Delhi court sent Kumar to judicial custody till Mar 2.

He was arrested on sedition charges.
