Rohit Vemula was not Dalit: Police Report
New Delhi, Feb 26 (IBNS) Hyderabad university student Rohith Vemula, who committed suicide triggering a nationwide debate on whether he had to end his life after a witch hunt for his social status, was not a Dalit but an OBC, according to reports in media quoting police sources.
A CNN-IBN report quoting a police report in Telangana said that he did not belong to any Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe.
"The police report says that certified copies collected from Irrigation Department in Hyderabad claims Vemula's caste as Vaddera (OBC) and not Dalit," the channel reported.
Along with the JNU student controversy, the issue of Rohit Vemula's suicide after an alleged period of harassment by the varsity has kicked up a storm.
Refuting Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Rohit Vermula suicide, HRD Minister Smriti Irani said a Dalit too has been made a member of the panel probing the cause of his death.
Opposition also asked for the resignation of Irani over Rohit Vermula.
Mayawati blamed Rohit Vermula's suicide on the RSS.
She said it is not the first time that such an incident occurred in Hyderabad University.
She blamed it on the RSS agenda against the backward classes.
The death of Vemula, a backward caste student, triggered agitations in the country as it is alleged that he was forced to end his life after a witch hunt by the university authorities.
Parliament in now debating the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) episode and Rohit Vermula's death in Hyderabad University to corner the Narendra Modi government.
