Former Mizoram governor and senior advocate Swaraj Kaushal, husband of the late Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, passed away on Thursday at the age of 73.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s Delhi unit confirmed his death in an official statement.

Kaushal, who was also the father of New Delhi MP Bansuri Swaraj, was rushed to AIIMS after he complained of chest pain on Thursday afternoon.

Doctors declared him dead soon after he was brought to the hospital, news agency PTI reported. His cremation will take place at the Lodhi Road crematorium.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled Kaushal’s death, recalling his contributions to public life and his service to the underprivileged.

“Pained by the passing of Shri Swaraj Kaushal Ji. He distinguished himself as a lawyer and a person who believed in using the legal profession to improve the lives of the underprivileged,” PM Modi wrote on X.

He also noted Kaushal’s tenure as India’s youngest governor, adding that he left a “lasting impression” on the people of Mizoram.

Bansuri Swaraj paid an emotional tribute to her father, remembering his discipline, patriotism and affection.

“Your affection, your discipline, your simplicity, your patriotism, and your boundless patience are the light of my life that will never dim,” she wrote on X. She said her father was now “reunited” with her mother, Sushma Swaraj, and described his passing as “the deepest pain of the heart.”

Swaraj Kaushal, a renowned lawyer with a distinguished career, remained a respected figure in legal and political circles for decades.

He married the BJP stalwart Sushma Swaraj in 1975 and is survived by his daughter Bansuri.
