Pregnant woman dies by suicide in Kerala; husband and mother-in-law arrested
Thrissur: A 23-year-old pregnant woman named Faseela was found hanging at her husband’s residence in Vellangular, located in Kerala’s Thrissur district, on July 29, media reports said.
The Irinjalakuda police have arrested her husband, Naufal, and her mother-in-law, Ramla, reported India Today.
Both were remanded to judicial custody on Wednesday.
The arrests came after Faseela’s family lodged a complaint alleging that she had died by suicide following prolonged domestic violence.
According to the police, the family provided WhatsApp messages exchanged between Faseela and her mother, where she recounted repeated episodes of abuse.
In her messages, Faseela disclosed that she was pregnant for the second time and that her husband had kicked her in the stomach on several occasions.
She also mentioned that he had broken her hand.
Faseela further alleged enduring verbal harassment at the hands of her mother-in-law.
In one of her final messages, she wrote to her mother: “I am going to die, or they will kill me.”
A case has been registered under charges of abetment to suicide and other applicable provisions.
After the inquest at the Government Medical College in Thrissur, her body was handed over to her family. Faseela is survived by her young son.
The incident has emerged amid a growing number of reports involving women from Kerala subjected to domestic violence in marriage.
On July 21, 29-year-old Athulya, a native of Kollam, was found dead in her apartment in the United Arab Emirates. Her family has accused her husband of murder, rejecting claims that she died by suicide. A murder case has been filed by the Kollam police.
Athulya’s family alleged that she had endured sustained physical and mental abuse since her marriage in 2014, primarily over dowry demands.
They released images and videos of bruises on her body.
Her husband, in a reported statement, admitted to physically assaulting her but dismissed it as “very normal.”
In another case from Sharjah, 32-year-old Vipanchika Maniyan and her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter were found dead on July 8.
A suicide note left behind by Vipanchika described years of abuse, dowry harassment, and emotional neglect. Despite repeated pleas for help, she wrote that no one responded.
Kerala Police have registered a case against her husband Nidheesh, along with his sister and father, under charges of abetment to suicide and offences related to dowry.
In her handwritten note, Vipanchika reportedly described the violence she endured, writing: “He used to watch certain videos and used to demand that I do those in bed. I was tortured and beaten up like a dog. I can’t take it anymore. Don’t spare them.”
