Lucknow: Former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh died on Saturday after suffering from prolonged illness.

He was 64.

He was a Rajya Sabha MP.

The senior politician was sent to a hospital in Singapore in March for surgery in a kidney-related illness.

Amar Singh, a sitting Rajya Sabha MP, was suffering from health-related issues for over a decade.

He had reportedly undergone a kidney transplant.

According to some media reports, he died in a Singapore hospital.

Earlier in the day, he had tweeted to wish people on Eid-Ul-Adha.

In 2016, he was elected to Rajya Sabha with support from Samajwadi Party even after facing stiff opposition from a section of the party including the then Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav.

He was also reinstated as one of the general secretaries of the party in October 2016.

Indian President Ram Nath Kovind expressed his sadness over the demise of the politician.

"Sad to hear of the demise of senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP, Shri Amar Singh. A man of many parts, Singh was an able parliamentarian. Condolences to his family, friends and well-wishers," the President said.

Indian PM Narendra Modi mourned his death and tweeted: "Amar Singh Ji  was an energetic public figure. In the last few decades, he witnessed some of the major political developments from close quarters. He was known for his friendships across many spheres of life. Saddened by his demise. Condolences to his friends & family. Om Shanti."

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also mourned the death of the leader.
