Kolkata/IBNS: A high-intensity earthquake jolted Kolkata at around 1:22 pm on Friday, triggering panic across the city.

People rushed out of offices and residential buildings and gathered on the streets as the tremors were felt for several seconds.

No immediate reports of casualties or major damage have been received so far. Authorities are monitoring the situation.

"I was working at a store when I felt the tremors for a few seconds. We immediately rushed out of the store," said a worker at a Salt Lake cafe.

Employees at various sectors rushed out of their offices in groups for safety purposes.

Several residents described the earthquake as unprecedented in intensity in recent times.

In an effect of the earthquake, a house at Ganesh Chandra Avenue has tilted prompting the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) officials rushing to the spot for inspection.
