Militants, security forces exchange fire in J&K

Srinagar, Feb 4 (IBNS) A fierce gunbattle erupted between suspected guerrillas and security forces in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Thursday, officials said.

According to police, security forces launched an operation at Khushi Mohalla Hajin in the district following information about presence of guerrillas in the area.

When the security forces approached towards a house, the guerrillas opened fire at them with automatic weapons, triggering a gunbattle which is still on.

“At least 2-3 guerrillas are believed to be trapped inside a house in the Khos Mohalla of Hajin,” senior Superintendent of Police Shabir Ahmad told IBNS.

He said  firing is on from both sides and so far no reports of causality has been reported.

The encounter comes just a week after three guerrillas of Lashkar-e-Toiba were killed in an encounter with security forces in the neighboring district of Kupwara in north Kashmir
