Senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy, a key lawyer in India’s historic Supreme Court verdict legalising same-sex marriage, has been nominated by the Trinamool Congress for the Rajya Sabha elections.

The party announced her candidature on X alongside Babul Supriyo, Rajeev Kumar, and Koel Mallick.

If elected, she would become the first openly queer Member of Parliament in India, marking a historic milestone for LGBTQ+ representation in the legislature.

Recently, it was Guruswamy who appeared for the TMC in legal proceedings challenging Enforcement Directorate searches at the offices of political consultancy I-PAC.

Her nomination by the TMC reflects the party’s approach of bringing experts from legal, administrative, and cultural fields into parliamentary politics.

Who is Menaka Guruswamy?

Guruswamy first came to national attention as one of the lead lawyers in the Supreme Court case that secured marriage equality for same-sex couples in India, making her a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.

In addition to her work on LGBTQ+ rights, Guruswamy has represented parties in significant criminal and civil matters.

Educated at top Indian law schools and trained in international law, Guruswamy is known for her rigorous legal acumen, advocacy skills, and strategic litigation in matters of national importance.

Guruswamy’s entry into the Rajya Sabha marks a significant moment for representation and diversity, signaling growing inclusion of queer voices and legal professionals in the legislative process.
