Mamata Banerjee attacks Centre over Panchkula violence

Kolkata, Aug 28 (IBNS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday attacked the Centre over the recent violence in Haryana following the conviction of self-styled spiritual leader Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in a rape case.

The violence left 36 people dead.

Attacking the Centre, Mamata Banerjee alleged disparity in aiding BJP and non-BJP ruled states in handling incidents of violence.

"In Panchkula, they could not handle one incident. More than 30 people lost their lives. If some incident happens in BJP-ruled State, Army is immediately called in. But no help is offered to non-BJP States," Banerjee said while addressing rally organised by the Trinamool's student wing here.

It was after Dera chief's conviction on Friday at a court in Haryana's Panchkula that violence broke out in the city with the Dera chief's followers attacking police, journalists and even damaging vehicles and public properties, disrupting normal life completely.

Violence was also reported from Delhi, Rajasthan and Punjab.

Meanwhile, the special CBI judge, on Monday, announced a 10-year-jail term for Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.

He was convicted for raping two Sadhvis (female followers).

The prosecution demanded maximum punishment for the rape convict while the Dera chief's defence argued that Ram Rahim is a social worker and urged the judge to take a lenient view.

The CBI urged the judge to treat the case as 'rarest of rare' during its argument.
