Maharashtra woman doctor dies by suicide after alleging rape by police officer

A woman doctor working at the Phaltan sub-district hospital in Maharashtra’s Satara district died by suicide on Thursday night, leaving behind a note on her left palm accusing Police Sub-Inspector Gopal Badne of repeatedly raping and harassing her over five months, media reports said.

In the note, she wrote that Badne’s abuse and the mental harassment by her landlady’s son, Prashant Bankar, drove her to take her life.

She had earlier submitted a written complaint to the Deputy Superintendent of Police on June 19, naming Badne, Sub-Divisional Police Inspector Patil, and Assistant Police Inspector Ladputre, and sought action against them.

Following the suicide, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered Badne’s suspension.

The incident has sparked political outrage, with the opposition Congress accusing the Mahayuti government of shielding police officials and failing to act on the victim’s earlier complaint.

BJP leader and State Women President Chitra Wagh said an FIR was being registered and a team had been formed to arrest the accused.

The Nationalist Congress Party also called for the “strictest action” against those involved.

The Maharashtra State Commission for Women has directed the Satara Superintendent of Police to investigate why the victim’s earlier complaints were ignored and to urgently locate the absconding officer.

The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem examination.
