Madhya Pradesh Minister Narottam Mishra disqualified by EC on corruption charges

New Delhi, June 24 (IBNS) : The Election Commission of India on Saturday disqualified Madhya Pradesh Health Minister Narottam Mishra from contesting elections for three years over alleged corrupt practices and paid news during 2008 assembly polls in the state, NDTV reported.

Narottam Mishra is considered  number two in the Shivraj Singh Chauhan cabinet. He is also the Minister for Public Relations.

The EC  decision came following a complaint by former Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti in April 2009 alleging that  Mishra had  paid for news without accounting for it in his expenses in 2008.

The ECI had issued a notice in January 2013 seeking his response.

Mishra  challenged the ECI  notice in the high court bench at Gwalior and obtained a  stay, which subsequently was vacated after the court considered the facts submitted by complainant's counsel.

Mishra  also moved the Supreme Court, which refused to  grant him any relief.
