Kashmir shuts down on 'Maqbool Bhat' death anniversary

Srinagar, Feb 11 (IBNS): Authorities on Thursday put severe restrictions on the movement of people in various parts of the Kashmir Valley as the area observed a complete shutdown on the occasion of the thirty second death anniversary of Mohammed Maqbool Bhat's hanging more than three decades ago.
Valley-wide shutdown and protests were called by separatists to press for return of mortal remains of Bhat and Afzal Guru to their families.

JKLF has also called a protest march to city centre Lal Chowk in Srinagar today.

Authorities detained dozens of Kashmiri activists and placed separatist leaders under house arrest to prevent them from holding protests to mark the anniversary Mohammed Maqbool Bhat.

A massive deployment of the police and the paramilitary forces was spotted in several areas of old Srinagar.

Various roads were blocked with rolls of concertina wires with security personnel manning the barricades.

"Restrictions will remain in force in Rainawari, Khanyar, Nowhatta, M.R. Gunj, Safa Kadal, Kralkhud and Maisuma areas in Srinagar to maintain law and order," a senior police officer said.

Mohammed Maqbool Bhat was secretly hanged in a New Delhi jail in 1984 after being convicted of killing an Indian intelligence officer.
