Kanhaiya recounts what happened in court premises on Feb 17

New Delhi, Feb 27 (IBNS): Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students' union president Kanhaiya Kumar, who is in jail after his arrest on sedition charges, claimed that he was beaten and almost disrobed in the presence of police personnel in Patiala House Court premises which looked like a mute spectator on Feb 17, according to a new video that surfaced capturing his account of the incident before lawyers.
The alleged incident happened when a group of lawyers beat Kanhaiya, students, teachers and mediapersons in the court premises on Feb 17.

"They were there all prepared and ready for me it seemed, they were telling others that I have been brought (a gaya, a gaya) . A mob dressed like lawyers attacked me. My T-shirt, pants, slippers, all came off in the attack. Even cops with me were beaten up," recounted Kanhaiya in the video who was presented in top court as evidence on what happened.

He said police protected him from mediapersons and took him inside but soon the men dressed like lawyers swooped down on him.

"I was on the ground. A man who beat me up left without being arrested though we all brought it to the notice of the police. He could have been arrested. The attacker was not scared of the cops," the JNU Ph.D student said.

"They were highly politically motivated persons," he said, recalling the event of that day, adding that he can identify the person who beat him up and the cops who let him go.

He said he told the judge that there was a trial in media with two media channels after him and he has full faith in Indian constitution.

Following the incident, the Supreme Court formed a team of five lawyers to submit a report on the incident in the court.

Several JNU students have been arrested for glorifying Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru and being part of an event where anti-India slogans were raised, triggering a nationwide debate that sharply divided the people.

JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested first on sedition charges after anti-India slogans were raised inside the JNU campus at an event to observe the death anniversary of Guru.

Later other students, including Umar Khalid, surrendered to police.
