Instagram post turns costly? Kolkata businessman's house robbed hours after wife flaunts gold necklace on social media

Robbers broke into the Garia residence of a Kolkata-based businessman and stole cash, jewellery and three bottles of imported liquor worth a total of Rs 9 lakh, hours after his wife shared an Instagram post showing a necklace valued at Rs 5 lakh.

The woman said her husband had gifted her the necklace on her birthday.

According to reports, the couple, their 10-year-old son and the necklace were not at home when the robbery took place.

CCTV footage from the house showed three burglars, dressed in smart clothes and wearing smartwatches, opening the refrigerator and using leftover birthday cake to smear the camera lenses in an apparent attempt to cover their tracks.

Police suspect that the photograph of the necklace shared on Instagram may have prompted the burglars to target the family.

"The necklace is worth Rs 5 lakh," an officer told The Times of India.

"People should be cautious about what they post on social media. Personal moments on social media can alert criminals," Baruipur Police Superintendent Arvind Kumar Anand told the newspaper.

"We have got leads and are hoping for a breakthrough soon," he added.

No arrests have been made so far.

Businessman Prithviraj Roy, who gave up a job abroad to establish a business in Kolkata, told The Times of India that the burglars had vandalised the house, damaging even his son's telescope.

"They vandalised the house, not sparing even my son's telescope. I believe the accused knew exactly where the switches and cameras were located. This was the third such incident in our locality since 2025. We were robbed even though every corner of our house is under CCTV surveillance. I told police that it's OK if I don't get the stolen items back, but they must ensure our safety," he said.

YouTuber robbed of gold and cash in Tamil Nadu

In September, a YouTuber from Tamil Nadu's Kanyakumari district, known for showcasing gold jewellery and bundles of cash on social media, was robbed after burglars broke into his house near Nagercoil and fled with 118 sovereigns of gold and cash.

The incident took place at VIP Garden in Thammathukonam, where YouTuber Vinoth Kumar lives with his wife, Madhumitha.

According to police, unidentified burglars broke open the rear door of the house during the night and entered the premises before stealing the valuables.

The latest robbery in Kolkata comes ahead of Dhanteras, when a large number of households across India purchase gold and silver jewellery.

Dhanteras, which will be observed on November 6, marks the beginning of the five-day Diwali festival in India.
