Indian Railways cancels all tickets booked for regular trains from July 1 to Aug 12

New Delhi/IBNS: The Indian Railways on Thursday informed that it will cancel all tickets booked for regular trains between July 1 and August 12 amid a spike in the number of coronavirus cases in the country.

The Railways said that only special trains announced in the month of May and June will run.

Following the Centre's announcement of relaxation of restrictions imposed in March, coronavirus cases have gone up.

Earlier in the month, the Railways also increased the number of passenger trains from 15 pairs or 30 journeys to over 200 per day.

The passengers were required to undergo compulsory thermal check-up at the stations and those found asymptomatic were only allowed to board trains.

Onboard the trains, all passengers were asked to maintain social distancing and wear face masks throughout the journey.

No catering services, bed linen, blankets or curtains were provided in coaches.

The announcement for cancellation of train services comes as India registered a record 16,922 new cases on Thursday, taking total cases in the country to nearly 5 lakh with nearly 15,000 deaths.

India is now only behind the United States, Brazil and Russia in the global spectrum of the pandemic's effect.
