India-Canada ties get major boost? Doval, Carney’s adviser discuss defence, security
National Security Adviser Ajit Doval held talks with David Morrison, Senior Diplomatic and International Affairs Adviser to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, in New Delhi, with both sides welcoming efforts to advance negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
The two sides also discussed the growing potential for advancing a substantive bilateral defence relationship in keeping with the vision of the leadership, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
During the meeting, Doval and Morrison reviewed progress in bilateral security and law-enforcement cooperation, including the implementation of the shared Security Work Plan concluded in February 2026.
They agreed to deepen coordination and cooperation in combating transnational organised crime, terrorism and violent extremism, human and drug trafficking, cybercrime, extortion and the extradition of criminal offenders.
"Both sides also reaffirmed their commitment to identifying additional areas for practical cooperation, including exploring the establishment of structured dialogues on cybersecurity and economic security," the MEA said.
The two sides further agreed to strengthen existing institutional mechanisms and establish new channels, as appropriate, to facilitate streamlined communication and timely information-sharing on matters of mutual concern.
Doval and Morrison also exchanged views on global developments during the meeting.
The talks in New Delhi were held as part of the ongoing bilateral security dialogue at the NSA level. The previous dialogues in this format were held in New Delhi in September 2025 and in Ottawa in February 2026.
