India app ban forces TikTok to distance itself from Beijing

Beijing/UNI: Social media app TikTok on Saturday distanced itself from Beijing after India banned 59 Chinese apps in the country, in retaliation to clashes in Galwan Valley, which left 20 Indian military personnel dead.

In a letter to the Indian government dated June 28, TikTok Chief Executive Kevin Mayer said the Chinese government has never requested user data, nor would the company turn it over if asked, Al Jazeera reported.

TikTok, which is owned by China's ByteDance, but ironically not available in China, has sought to distance itself from its Chinese connection, so as not to lose its billions of global consumers.

TikTok was banned by India, along with 58 other Chinese apps, including Tencent Holdings Ltd's WeChat and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd's UC Browser this week, following a border clash with China.
