Haryana stir: Jat leaders to continue protest, 8 killed in violence
Rohtak, Feb 21 (IBNS): At least eight people have been killed and 78 others have been injured in Haryana as Jat community protesters, demanding they be given government jobs under OBC quota, continued their agitation for the eighth day on Sunday.
Despite curfew and Army presence, protesters continued violence in Rohtak, Jhajjar and several other towns.
They also set ablaze many vehicles and buildings on Saturday.
Earlier, protesters allegedly set on fire the house of Haryana minister Capt Abhimanyu, who was not present inside the house then.
After the meeting between Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar and the Jat leaders failed, the protesters took to the streets in Kaithal, Karnal, Jind and other districts in the state, disrupting road and rail traffic.
In Jind, trains were stopped and prohibitory orders under Section 144 imposed after the clash, according to local media reports.
The curfew will reportedly continue in several towns and districts including Rohtak, Bhiwani, Sonepat, Jhajjar, Hisar and Hansi on Sunday.
The Jat quota stir of Haryana reached Delhi on Saturday as Jat students protested at the north campus of Delhi University and agitators gathered at the Delhi-Sonepat border blocking National Highway 1 that connects Delhi with Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
Nearly 500 trains were cancelled in the region, including the Rajdhani and Shatabdi which have been cancelled until Sunday noon.
Earlier, mobile internet services have been suspended by the administration as protests in Haryana's Rohtak gains momentum, entering the sixth day on Friday, according to reports.
Demanding reservation for them, the Jat community's protest turned violent on Thursday evening.
Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal spoke to his counter part in Haryana and to Rajnath Singh so that the protest in Haryana did not affect the water supply to Delhi.
Kejriwal later tweeted "Spoke to Rajnath ji also and apprised him of grave situation. He has assured that army is being sent to munak canal."
