New Delhi/UN/IBNSI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said in the Lok Sabha that the government was ready for a discussion on the northeastern state of Manipur, roiled by unprecedented ethnic violence that claimed over 100 lives and led to violence against women.

“Both sides, ruling party and opposition, have demanded for discussion over this very sensitive issue. I am ready for a discussion on the issue in the house, but I don’t know why the opposition doesn’t want that discussion to take place,” Shah said.

“It is my request to opposition members to let the discussion on this sensitive issue take place and it is important that the nation gets to know the truth on this issue,” the Minister said.

Amid uproar by Opposition members on the third day of the monsoon session of Parliament over Manipur issue, the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 11 am on Tuesday.

The opposition has constantly demanded for discussion on Manipur situation in Parliament and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement on this issue.

Today, the proceedings of the house began, amid pandemonium, on the Manipur issue as the opposition was demanding a detailed discussion on the issue.

Ahead of the Monsoon Session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday broke his silence on Manipur and referring to the sexual violence on women said that it "brings shame to humanity”. He said what has happened to daughters of Manipur (naked parading and rape of women) can never be forgiven and the "guilty will not be spared.”

Addressing the media, Modi said, "The whole country is being insulted, and 140 crore countrymen are feeling ashamed.
