Panaji/IBNS: A 31-year-old man in Goa has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a court for raping and murdering Irish-British national Danielle McLaughin in 2017, media reports said.

On last Friday, Vikat Bhagat was held guilty of raping the 28-year-old tourist whose body was found naked in a pool of blood at a forest in south Goa.

Apart from life imprisonment, Bhagat has been fined Rs. 25,000 for the rape and murder and another Rs. 10,000 for destroying evidence.

Bhagat will also have to serve a simultaneous two-year imprisonment for the destruction of evidence.

According to the chargesheet filed by Goa Police, McLaughin, who was from Donegal in Northwest Ireland, came to Goa in 2017.

He befriended Bhagat and spent an evening with him.

The victim had died of an attack on her head with a stone.
