Freezing cold grips Kashmir as temperature dips

Srinagar/IBNS/UNI: Freezing cold has gripped the Kashmir valley following a drop in night temperature on Sunday.

The Meteorological Centre Srinagar said the city recorded a low of -2.1 °C on Sunday, against 1.2°C recorded Saturday night. It was 0.1°C below normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during this period of the season.

The maximum temperature was 1.2°C above the normal of 8.6°C, against 9.8°C in Srinagar recorded the previous day. Barring Gulmarg in north Kashmir, the day temperature was also recorded above normal in other parts of the valley on Saturday.

Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway recorded a low of -2.0°C against the 1.4°C recorded the previous night, while Kokernag had a low of -1.1°C against the 1.2°C recovered a day ago.

The tourist hot spot of Pahalgam remained the coldest place in Kashmir Valley, with -3.9°C recorded on Sunday against the 0.2°C recorded a day ago. It was 1.1°C above normal for the valley of shepherds in south Kashmir.

Gulmarg recorded a low of -3.5°C against the -1.5°C recorded the previous night, and it was 2.3°C above normal for the famous ski resort of north Kashmir.

Kupwara settled at -2.7°C on Sunday, against the 1.3°C recorded on Saturday. It was 0.1°C below normal for the north Kashmir district, the MeT office said.

The MeT office said the weather will remain generally dry until Dece 26 and generally cloudy, with the possibility of light snow over isolated higher reaches the following day.

From December 28 until the end of the month, the weather will remain generally dry, the MeT office said, adding that there will be no significant weather activity until the end of December.
